A coast is not a single destination
The most useful accommodation decision on the Great Ocean Road happens before comparing rooms: decide which part of the coast you actually want to spend time in. A property can look close to everything on a small map while leaving each day dominated by driving.
Visit Victoria’s official touring route treats the journey as a sequence through the Surf Coast, Apollo Bay, the Otways and the western coastal landmarks. That is a helpful starting point, even if your own trip covers only one section.
Lorne for a shorter coastal stay
A base around Lorne makes sense when the town and the eastern stretch of coast are the main event. Think in terms of the days you want: a beach walk, time in town and one outing, with the option to return to the same place without repacking.
Before choosing a hillside property, check the actual route between the accommodation and the places you expect to walk. A view over town and a convenient walk into it are separate qualities. Parking and access details deserve as much attention as the terrace photograph.
Apollo Bay for coast and Otways
Apollo Bay offers a different centre of gravity. It belongs naturally in a trip that gives both the coast and the Otways time, rather than treating forest stops as additions to a full day of driving.
For a two-night stay, choose one substantial outing and leave the other half of the trip relatively open. A kitchen, comfortable indoor space and a flexible meal plan can matter more than a long amenities list when the weather changes.
Port Campbell for the western landmarks
If the Twelve Apostles and nearby coastal landscapes are the reason for travelling, accommodation around Port Campbell puts that part of the journey at the centre. It also changes the shape of arrival and departure days: allow those to be travel days rather than promising yourself a full holiday schedule after a long drive.
A moving road trip may suit someone who enjoys the journey itself. A single base suits someone who wants to unpack and return to familiar surroundings. Neither requires collecting every named stop.
Choose the room after the route
Once the base is settled, compare the things that will affect your particular stay: bed arrangement, heating, cooking facilities, entrance steps, check-in arrangements and the cancellation terms attached to your dates.
